The building shown in photo is the Vecchiano pumping station. By itself it is able to dry up to 10,000 liters of water per second. It maintains the normal regulation of the lake over the entire lake area.
To remove the amount of water that came out of the Serchio in 2009, which is estimated to be around 30 million cubic meters, it was assumed that the pumping station would be kept on for about two months.
At the time the Misa technicians scoured the pumping station using a boat, to check the status of the damage.
After assessing a sufficient degree of safety for the electric motors, the pump was started up with some generators.
The plant was able to empty the flooded area in just 40 days of uninterrupted operation.
Subsequently, it was completely renovated, increasing the safety of the electric pumps and the switchboards.
